iPhone Voice Isolation in 2026: How to Turn It On, Turn It Off, and Pick a Mic Mode

Open Control Center during a call or recording and choose Voice Isolation to block room noise, or Standard to turn it off. It does not clean a video already on the camera roll.

iPhone Voice Isolation is a mic mode that prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise while you talk. You turn it on from Control Center during a call or a recording, and you turn it off by picking another mic mode. It doesn't open a video you already exported, and it doesn't rewrite a Voice Memo that finished before you changed the setting.

If the noise is already in a video on your camera roll, upload it to the EraseNoise video noise remover in Safari. You hear a free 30-second preview before you process the full video.

Key Takeaways

  • Turn it on during the call or recording: Control Center, the app's Controls, Audio & Video, Voice Isolation.
  • There is no separate off switch. Choose Standard, Wide Spectrum, or Automatic instead.
  • The choice stays with that app until you pick a different mic mode.
  • FaceTime and certain third-party apps need iOS 15 or later. Recording apps such as Voice Memos need iOS 26 or later. Phone calls need iOS 16.4 or later.
  • Phone Noise Cancellation in Accessibility is a different setting. It helps you hear the caller. It doesn't clean your voice for them.

Quick answer

Before or during a call or recording, open Control Center and choose Voice Isolation. To turn it off, choose Standard. For a video or voice memo you already recorded, Voice Isolation can't help: clean the file with EraseNoise and judge 30 seconds first.

The four iPhone mic modes

Apple's support article lists four mic modes under Audio & Video. (Apple Support: Voice Isolation, updated November 7, 2025.)

Mic modeWhat Apple says it doesPick it when
Voice IsolationPrioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noisesYou're in a cafe, on a street, or near a fan
StandardUses standard voice processingYou want Voice Isolation off
Wide SpectrumLeaves ambient noises unfilteredYou want the room or an instrument in the call
AutomaticUses the mic mode that's best for the call or recordingYou'd rather let the phone choose (iOS 18 or later)

The selection affects only the app you're using. It persists for that app until you choose a different one. Changing FaceTime doesn't change Voice Memos, and changing Voice Memos doesn't repair a clip already in Photos. In supported apps, you can also change the mode before the call or recording starts.

How to turn on Voice Isolation

  1. Start the call or the recording. The control isn't a setting you apply to a finished file.
  2. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
  3. Tap the app's Controls button.
  4. Under Audio & Video, choose Voice Isolation.

Apple's examples for Automatic matter here. During calls that use the receiver, Automatic uses Voice Isolation. During speakerphone calls, Automatic uses Standard. If you want background noise suppressed on speakerphone, choose Voice Isolation yourself instead of leaving the phone on Automatic.

In iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1, supported wired microphones, including EarPods with a USB-C connector, also get an input-gain slider under Audio Input in the same Controls panel. That slider changes level. It isn't a second noise filter.

How to turn off Voice Isolation

Apple doesn't offer a separate off switch. You leave Voice Isolation by choosing another mode in the same place:

  1. During the call or recording, open Control Center.
  2. Tap the app's Controls button.
  3. Under Audio & Video, choose Standard.

Choose Wide Spectrum instead if you want the room left in on purpose, for example when you're playing an instrument on FaceTime. Wide Spectrum isn't available on phone calls, so on a regular call your choices are Standard, Voice Isolation, or Automatic.

Turning it off makes sense in a quiet room, or when Voice Isolation makes your voice sound thin. Because the setting stays with each app, check every app you use. Turning it off in FaceTime leaves it on in another calling app if you picked it there.

Check the iOS version and the phone before you look for the button

Apple splits the feature by the kind of audio you're making:

  • FaceTime audio or video, and certain third-party apps: iOS 15 or later for Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum.
  • An audio or video recording app such as Voice Memos, and certain third-party apps: iOS 26 or later for Voice Isolation.
  • A phone call: iOS 16.4 or later. Wide Spectrum isn't available on phone calls.
  • Automatic Mic Mode: iOS 18 or later.

Supported phones start with iPhone XR and iPhone XS. Older phones don't get the control, even if the iOS number looks new enough. iPad support starts with iPad 8th generation, iPad Air 3rd generation, iPad mini 5th generation, and the Pro models listed in Apple's article.

If the button is missing, check the app and the system version before you assume the microphone is broken. A third-party app also has to support mic modes for the control to show up.

Voice Isolation vs Phone Noise Cancellation

People searching for "iPhone noise cancellation" often mix up two settings that work in opposite directions.

Voice Isolation cleans your microphone. It changes what the other person hears from you.

Phone Noise Cancellation is in Settings, Accessibility, Audio & Visual. Apple's iPhone User Guide says it uses air pressure to reduce ambient background noise to help you hear better when you hold the receiver to your ear on phone calls in noisy places. The same guide says it's available and on by default on iPhone 12 and earlier, and can be turned off. (iPhone User Guide, iOS 15: Mono audio, balance, phone noise cancellation, retrieved 2026-10-21.)

So if the caller complains about the noise around you, turn on Voice Isolation. If you're the one who can't hear the caller on a busy street, Phone Noise Cancellation is the setting that targets your side of the receiver, on the phones that have it.

When EraseNoise is faster

Voice Isolation can't reach backward. When the street, the cafe, or the office is already in the file, EraseNoise works on that file, from the same phone.

  1. Open the video noise remover in Safari, or the audio noise remover for a voice memo.
  2. Upload the video from Photos, or the voice memo from Files.
  3. Listen to the free 30-second preview against the original.
  4. If the voice is clearer and still sounds like the speaker, sign in and process the full file with paid minutes.
  5. Download the result. Video comes back as MP4 and audio as WAV. Files are deleted after 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn off Voice Isolation on iPhone?

Open Control Center during the call or recording, tap the app's Controls button, and under Audio & Video choose Standard. There's no separate off switch. The new choice stays with that app until you change it again.

What is mic mode on iPhone?

Mic mode is the name for the microphone options in Control Center: Voice Isolation, Standard, Wide Spectrum, and Automatic. Each app remembers its own choice.

Can I use Voice Isolation on a regular phone call?

Yes, on iOS 16.4 or later with an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or later model. Wide Spectrum isn't offered on phone calls. On Automatic, the phone uses Voice Isolation on the receiver and Standard on speakerphone.

Does iPhone Voice Isolation remove noise from an old video?

No. Apple documents it as a mic mode during a call or recording. A saved video needs a separate edit.

Why is Voice Isolation missing in Voice Memos?

Recording apps need iOS 26 or later. FaceTime can show the same control on iOS 15 or later, and phone calls on iOS 16.4 or later. The phone also has to be an iPhone XR, an iPhone XS, or a later model.

How do I remove background noise from an iPhone video I already recorded?

Upload it to EraseNoise in Safari and listen to the free 30-second preview. If the voice is clearer, process the full video and download the MP4.

The practical takeaway

Turn on Voice Isolation before the next call or recording. For a video or voice memo you already have, upload it to the EraseNoise video noise remover and judge 30 seconds before you reshoot anything.
